Kindergarten Trials at Los Alamitos

The field for the first futurity of the year, the Grade 2 $294,500 Kindergarten Futurity, will be decided tonight as sixty-one juveniles will compete in eight trials. The ten fastest 2-year-olds will return to run in the May 17 final. First race on the card is a maiden event for thoroughbreds and races 2 through 9 will be trials at the distance of 300 yards.

Selections:

Race 1:  2-7-8

#2 Kalihi Sun has gotten a couple of troubled trips in his last few starts having to steady and lose momentum. In a field lacking any strong speed, he might be the one to catch if he gets a clean trip.

Race 2:  4-1-7

#4 Walk Thru Crystal turned in one of the most impressive debut wins of the year when she came away sharply and pulled away with authority from the outside post. She's the one to beat but it will be interesting to see how she handles breaking from between horses.

Race 3:  1-5-2

#1 Over Limits finished with good energy when finishing a good second in his debut. He's got good breeding, good trainer, and good jockey. Expect big improvement in second start.

Race 4:  5-7-2

#5 Marko Czech outran her odds when finishing a good second at odds of 32-1 in her debut behind Walk Thru Crystal who ran in race 2.  Her trainer is having a solid year and there is plenty of room for improvement.

Race 5:  5-4-8

#5 Daring N Different was a well-backed favorite in her debut when she appeared to be pulling away to an easy win before lugging in and fading to third late in the race. She seemed a bit green and you have to think she will be much more focused second time out.

Race 6:  3-6-4

#3 High Class Honey ran a good second in her debut when finishing ahead of fellow rival Bugs Wagon. What i liked best about the debut was that she broke on top and got some good experience.

Race 7:  2-6-1

#2 Colt as Ice posted a mild upset when winning his debut at odds of 7-1 for a top trainer and jockey combination. He's a well-bred colt that looks to have plenty of talent to show.

Race 8:  8-5-1

#8 Thru the Night broke slow in his debut when when racing towards the back of field before unleashing a good late kick to finish fifth beaten only a neck for the win. Today's outside post should give him plenty of room for a clean break from the outside post.

Race 9:  3-2-1

#3 Flashy Big delivered one of the most visually impressive debut wins when he broke on top and finished strong. His trainer is no stranger to having superstar runners and if this guy can keep improving, he will be a big name down the road.
