Friday @ Los Alamitos: 100-yard Dash

A new week of racing begins at Los Alamitos Race Course with an 8-race program that features a pair of 2-year-old events and the running of the Santa Ana Handicap at the don't-blink-or-you'll-miss-it distance of 100 yards. Below are the picks for tonight. Stay tuned to my twitter feed for my Doubles, Pick-3s and Pick-4s.

Race 1:  3-9-2

#3 Southern Owah returns to the track of her maiden-breaking win back in January where she went from gate to wire. Jockey Ramon Guce is back aboard and new trainer Keith Craigmyle has been on a good run lately.

Race 2:  1-10-5

#1 Miss Special Regard has shown good accelerations in both of her workouts in preparation for tonight's debut. She outworked both of her foes in each workout and looked to be getting stronger down the lane. Maybe she can avoid bumping at the break with her inside post.

Race 3:  1-4-2

#1 Swiss Peak comes off a strong win against a lower level of open claimers. She steps up in claiming price but she's in a conditioned spot that might prove to her advantage. She's won three of her last five starts and has a sharp apprentice rider aboard.

Race 4:  5-4-8

#5 Time Toget Ahead made his debut a winning one a few weeks ago when crushing his competition. He will be tough to handle if he improves off his last effort. Top rider sticks aboard.

Race 5:  3-2-6

#3 Ruidoso Rocker didn't get a way to a good start lat time out when finishing third as the betting favorite as this same level. She's making her second start for a sharp trainer.

Race 6:  3-1-4

#3 Carnegie Haul has shown good acceleration from the gate in both of his workouts and looks to have plenty of talent for sharp connections.

Race 7:  1-7-6

#1 Bma Lake Van was unlucky to lose last out when breaking slow and getting bumped from both sides before showing a good late run to miss by a diminishing neck. She gets an extra 30 yards today and all she needs is a clean start.

Race 8:  4-2-1

#4 Durio broke fast and held on for the win at this same distance lat time out when setting a new track record. He's in sharp form and has terrific gate speed.

I watch horses run around.
