Los Alamitos Thoroughbred Opening Day

This year's spring Thoroughbred meet at Los Alamitos kicks off earlier than usual given a bit of a change in the schedule for the Southern California circuit. While Santa Anita Park takes a break, Los Alamitos will run for three weeks beginning today on a Thursday through Sunday schedule with a first post of 2 p.m. Santa Anita Park will then open up again on the week of the Kentucky Derby and run right until the start of the Del Mar summer meet in the middle of July.

Los Alamitos Spring Meet highlights:

-$100,000 GIII Los Angeles Stakes on April 16
-$100,000 Bertrando Stakes on April 16
-$200,000 GII Great Lady M. on April 23
-$75,000 Surfside Stakes on April 24
-$150,000 California Chrome Stakes om April 30

Live Money Handicapping Contest on April 23 with five seats to the 2017 DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas.

Today's selections:

Race 1:  4-7-1

#4 Hadfunlastnight has good early speed and that is a good weapon to have over this track. He's run well for Agapito including a win and two seconds. #AgapitoTime

Race 2:  10-2-6

#10 Express Checkout has not been seen since a disappointing effort over the Del Mar turf last summer. I like the set of workouts in preparation for this event and I like that she has previous racing experience over this track.

Race 3:  5-4-2

#5 Silver Mojave comes off a solid effort where she had the lead in the stretch against a solid group over the downhill course at Santa Anita. She can sit a good stalking trip behind the favorite.

Race 4:  5-2-3

#5 Oil appears to be the class and speed of the field. He will definitely try to take them gate to wire.

Race 5:  5-6-1

#5 Lord of Chaos has run well in two of his three starts and will be tough to handle if he improves off his last start. He's worked well over the dirt here at Los Alamitos.

Race 6:  2-4-3

#2 Ebony Cat can post an upset if she gets a good tracking trip behind a duel between #3 & #4. She has a couple of good wins over the nighttime programs here at Los Alamitos so she is no stranger to this track.

Race 7:  2-4-6

#2 It Is Living Water has shown he can win on the lead or closing form the back of the pack and this race could have a variety of different scenarios unfold in regards to the pace so I like this guy's chances.

Race 8:  1-4-8

#1 Bishops of Compton is dropping in class to the lowest level of her career. Her race against straight maidens last year over this track was a decent third. A repeat of that effort should have her in the mix against this suspect field. #AgapitoTime
I watch horses run around.
