Thursday at Los Alamitos

The second and final week of the Summer Thoroughbred Festival at Los Alamitos gets underway with an 8-race card that begins at 2:15 p.m. Horses that have been setting the pace or close to the leaders have been enjoying success (especially in sprints) throughout the first week of the meet. We have seen some long shots get the job done and the long stretch at Los Alamitos has proven to be tricky at times for a few jockeys. Keep an eye out for horses that ran here last year, they tend to run well with previous local experience.

Today's Picks:

Race 1:  2-6-1

#2 Dekko returned after a year on the sidelines and ran a very good second in a sprint at this same level. He's stretching back out to a route and he's shown he can win going two turns.

Race 2:  4-5-3

#4 Exposure comes off a maiden win when dropping in class to the maiden claiming ranks for the first time. She has enough speed to stay close to the leaders early on and make her move down the stretch.

Race 3:  4-3-2

#4 Seek Safe Harbor's style is go to the front and take them as far as you can. That has worked well for her as she comes into this race with back to back wins.

Race 4:  9-2-3

#9 Slew to Fly is one of the few runners that has running experience in this field. He had a fast workout over this surface prior to his debut and I think he will improve in his second start while also taking a drop in class.

Race 5:  5-4-6

#5 Just Kidding has experience running at this distance and comes off two good efforts. He looks like the deserving favorite.

Race 6:  9-1-7

#9 Finallygotabentley didn't seem to care for the mile distance last time out and if you look at his previous three sprints this year, he looks in a great spot today.

Race 7:  6-2-5

#6 Maximinus faced a sharp field last time out and finished an even fourth in that race. He showed terrific early speed in his previous race and he will be tough to catch if he gets away with an early lead.

Race 8:  7-8-3

#7 The B G Way ran a good race two starts ago when finishing second after some early trouble at odds of 74-1. He has some low profile connections and might once again be overlooked on the tote board.

I watch horses run around.
