Kool Million Wins the Maiden Stakes for the Home Team

With a good break from the rail post, #1 Kool Million held off a late run from 25-1 longshot #5 One Famous Ferragamo (who I wanted to win to boost a higher payout in both of my pick fours) to win the 2012 running of the Maiden Stakes at Los Alamitos. Kool Million is owned by Ed Allred who is the owner of Los Alamitos Race Course. Ed Allred is also the breeder of this 3-year-old gelding by Bono Jazz out of Kool as Ever (by Chicks Beduino). He covered the 350 yards in a time of 17.642 seconds to take the winner's share purse. He was ridden by Jockey Cruz Mendez, who also won the Winter Championship last sunday, and trained by Jose Flores. Check out the picture and the video below.

Maiden Stakes Night

Hola Amigos,
Beautiful weather in OC tonight makes a pefect evening to spend it at the track of sunsets and stars, Los Alamitos. Tonight's card is highlighted by the running of the Maiden Stakes with a purse of $151,750 that has a wide open field just begging to be won by a price horse. The early and late pick four's have some good betting choices in the sequence which make for some challenging handicapping. Let's get to it.

Race 1: Two deep in this event with #2 Cowgrlsdontcry who just got nipped at wire last time out for the win when having the lead every step of the way. She now shorten 30 yards and is the one to beat. Top pick will be #3 Red Hot Runaway who is making his first start since december and drops in class. This gelding has showed some numbers that put him in the hunt.

Race 2: Three deep in this race that has some solid runners. Starting off with #2 Sasha Corona who gets the services of leading rider for a barn that he usually does not ride much. Her race three back should put her in the race. Top pick will be #6 Check Over Hope who lugged in last time and was not fully asked to run. Let's see if new rider can get her straight. Closing out with #7 Gc Blondie who has consistent efforts that make her the favorite with an outside post.

Race 3: This seemed like the hardest race for me to figure out given the good level of competition. Four deep with #1 Whittier Girl who is my top pick as she drops for the first time into claiming ranks. Also using #2 Watch This Secret, #4 Dream The Day Away, and #6 Trying.

Race 4: I am going to Single #1 Rare Bac. This gelding comes off a winning effort at this same level last time out. All of his three wins have come with this rider above and he had been facing much classier opponents before. Not to mention that Trainer Paul Jones has been firing with all his runners lately.

$24 Play: 2,3/2,6,7/1,2,4,6/1

Good Luck!

Keep it locked on twitter tonight for a late pk4 play and some paddock picks!

No Apology No looking Back

Hola Amigos,

Tonight we don't have a nice $133k plus in the pk6 pool like last night but we do have a nice early pk4 sequence. Lets get to tonight's play.

Race 1: Single #1 No Apology. First off the claim for a new trainer that has had this filly for about a month and gets the 10lb apprentice on board with a good rail draw.

Race 2: Droppers and second time starters for me in this second race as I am going four deep with #2 Givemesumcorona , #3 Creston Dasher, #4 Go Class Go and #8 Infinity Bryan.

Race 3: Some fast horses with speed of #7 Cajun Gent and also the two other horses that have been close to him #6 Alphonso and #3 Forest Prince.

Race #4: Closing out the pk4 with three horses #2 La Barbara, #5 Mia Corona Special and #7 Frankly First Ace.

$36 Play : 1/2,3,4,8/3,6,7/2,5,7

Good luck!

Carryover Friday at Los Alamitos of almost $40,000

Hola Amigos,

It is finally friday. We have a great night of racing tonight at los alamitos with a wide open 9 race card. There is an almost $40,000 in the pick six carryover which starts in race 4 that is going to make the night interesting. Last Sunday we came close to cashing a 5 of 6 ticket but got unlucky in the last race to close it out. As always, we two great pick fours (races 1-4 and 6-9) that have been attracting some big pools and nice payouts. There is a 3/5 morning line favorite in race 5 that i believe is in danger of getting beat and that might be the separator tonight in the pick six play. Let's get to it.

Race 1: I am going three deep in this race which starts the early pick four. Using #2 Quick Tempo who was making his first start under the lights at los alamitos last time out and ran a decent third. Also using #3 Tuneful who always seems to be in contention in all her races. This Bono Jazz filly was dropped to this level last time out and got beat a head after a not so good start. Top pick will be #5 Dyansty Beach who is making the biggest drop of the field. Seems like is now or never for this gelding.

Race 2: I am going to Single #1 Royal Gray. This gelding has shown terrific speed in his short career (4 lifetime starts) while racing tougher competition. He has the rail post and if he shows his usual speed he should be able to establish position and reserve some energy for the stretch.

Race 3: Two deep in this third race. Top pick is #1 Louisiana Flush who showed a terrific closing kick in her last start when making up alot of ground late. With a better break from the inside post, she should be dangerous. We cannot overlook the consistency of #3 Mayla Bonita who just seems to fire everytime and has some good running figures.

Race 4: Start of the $39,000 pick six carryover and it also concludes the early pick four. Three deep in this race with #5 Aces N Ale who just broke her maiden last out in a good effort while earning her best lifetime speed figure and has improve in each start. Also using #8 Thinking Regal who is making his first start of the claim for a new trainer and retains the services of leading rider. Last time out his gelding broke slow while throwing his head at the break and leveled out late and showed good run past the wire while only beaten a neck. Top Pick will be #9 Fireman Dave who ran a gutsy effort to run second last time out in a fast race. This gelding is making his second start off the layoff and comes into the race with his best lifetime speed figure and also the best last out figure of the field (90).

Race 5: There is no denying that #6 Aurelia D will be super tough to beat but i will also use #2 Mama's Stroker who is slowly improving in each start and has some speed to gain position early. Also using #4 Doerae Free who is making her second start for trainer Charles Treece and takes the blinkers off. Treece is winning at 38% with that move. Not to mention this mare has shown speed before. Get brave on the lead.

Race 6: My first single of the sequence comes in this sixth race with #1 Badget Cat. Many angles that i like are first off the claim for new trainer (37%), 21 and 1 type speed in a field that is lacking much speed, 10lb apprentice on board, and a good rail draw to gain position early. Single.

Race 7: Second single comes by the way of #3 Rose Pedals. This filly made a good debut last time out when breaking on TOP of the field and running a good third against a solid group of runners. Returns at the same level and she is drawn between two slow breakers. Single.

Race 8: This is a good field of special weight maidens. Three deep in this race for our ticket with #2 What a Zoomer who ran a good third last time out while earning the best last out speed figure of the field. Top pick will be #5 Kool Tobeme who broke outward and got bumped hard at the break last time out and still recovered to run a good second at big odds of 64-1. Trainer-Jockey combo do good. Also using #7 Dash too Blue who is making his second start off a small layoff and gets a nice outside post and has the class edge over this field.

Race 9: The close out leg. Hope to be alive in my plays up until this point and we should be in good shape to cash. Going two deep in this race with #4 Check Out The Bar who just ran the best race of her career last out when second while being one and a half-length clear of the third place finisher. Top Pick will be #6 Check  Merri Out who improved big time last out while only making her second career life-time start. Gets leading rider Rodrigo Aceves on board and has a nice outside post.

$18 Early Pick 4 (races 1-4): 2,3,5/1/1,3/5,8,9

$108 Pick 6 (races 4-9): 5,8,9/2,4,6/1/3/2,5,7/4,6

Good Luck!

El Aguila Real Powerful in Winter Championship

El Aguila Real punches his ticket to this year's Champion of Champions which is scheduled to be held on Decmber 15th at Los Alamitos Race Course. It was a good clean start for El Aguila Real who broke nicely and found his best stride early to gain a slight lead throughout the race. The consistent El Senor Toby also broke good and gave El Aguila Real a good run for his money but at the end Cruz Mendez and El Aguila Real cruised home under a hand ride. While this field was one of the most competitive in recent years, this Grade I win looked easy as the race got longer. Congratulations to all the winning connections. Check out the video below.

In a thrilling renewal of the 2012 running of the Grade I Winter Derby, Kobe came out a winner in a insanely close photo finish. The winner was ridden by Cody Jensen and trained by Paul Jones for owners and breeders Mark and Mary Parsons.

Happy Owners on TVG set after the race.

Winter Championship road to Champion of Champions

Hola Amigos,

We are back tonight after an exciting running of the Winter Derby last night in which the winning photo revealed Kobe and Deniro millimeters apart for the Grade I win. Tonight's feature race is the Grade I Winter Championship which features a wide open field headed by the 8-year old Jess You and I and the hot horse Señor Toby (Who is running a 7 race win streak). To spice up the card we also have a pick 6 carry over of almost $19,000. Let's Get to it.

Race 1: #2 Fontainbleu has always been regarded as a horse with talent but his unlucky breaks has not given him a chance to show what he is made of. I like that he is drawn next to a slow working first time starter and will give him one more chance. My Top pick will be #5 Famous Fury who made his first start since July of 2011 last time out where he broke on top and had the lead and got beat at the wire by a head. With that race under his belt, I expect this Utah bred to come out running.

Race 2: I am going two deep in this race using the speed #2 Blue Marrow and the closer #1 Princess Ryan. Both fillies come from wins in each of their previous efforts and arrive for top connections.

Race 3: I can make a case for all of the runners in this field so I will press the ALL button for this group of six.

Race 4: This race concludes the pick four and it also begins the pick six. I am going to single #2 Ahh Lover in this event. I like that this gelding has shown tenacity in the races where he has fought on the lead and still pull clear. I expect the outside horse to provide pressure but I don't think Ahh Lover will give in.

Race 5: Two deep in this event with my top pick being #1 Chick on the Wire. This gelding gets a nice inside post and gets the services of a more experience rider. Notice that horse was brought back to run in a maiden special race after running second in a $4,000 maiden claimer. Drops back in class and a good break puts him in the hunt. Also using #5 Jw Chicks Cutie who is deserving favorite off better running lines and is only making her second start at los al.

Race 6: This is a difficult race and I am going to with #1 Bonos Lucky Jeans and #6 Inmate separate. #1 can break on top and #6 has run against classier horses.

Race 7: Three deep in this event with #1 Sheza Fast Habit who had a rough trip last time out against Noconi (Running in the Championship) and gets the services of Rodrigo A ceves. Top pick will be #6 What a performance who is a mare who had a blistering workout last time out while making her first start since 2009 but did not fire. Second time out makes her dangerous. Also using #7 Send the candy Wagon who won the race at the break last time out. If she breaks like that again she will be gone.

Race 8: The Grade I Winter Championship. I like these four runners to get the job done tonight. #4 Senor Toby, #5 El Aguila Real, #7 Dash Back Perry, and #8 Sparky E Boy. Tough field.

Race 9: I have a single in this race. If you have read my blog in different occasions I bet you can figure out who I like without telling you. #4 Mr Comando. This gelding has a tremendous closing kick but has been unlucky at the gate. I like the distance and I like the slight drop in class.

Early pick 4 $24 Ticket: 2,5/1,2/ALL/2

Pick 6 $96 Ticket: 2/1,5/1,6/1,6,7/4,5,7,8/4

Good luck!

Winter Derby Night

Hola Amigos,

We have a great night of racing ahead of us tonight here at Los Alamitos highlighted by the running of the $200,000 Grade I Winter Derby for 3-Year Olds going 400 yards. The late pick 4 looks attractive with some good fields so we are going to focus on that sequence tonight. Let's get to it.

Race 6: This maiden field of thoroughbreds looks wide open so we are going to press the ALL button and try to catch a price.

Race 7: I really do not see anyone beating #2 Tres of Linda coming off strong showings versus much tougher and classier fields. She has always shown ability and has not been off the board in her four lifetime starts. Single.

Race 8: The Grade I Winter Derby. We loved #10 Deniro last time out and he won with speed to spare to give us a nice 14/1 price. He is the fastest qualifier and is the deserving morning line favorite off of that effort. He draws the outside post once again and should fire right back. This time we are also going to use #7 Flying Rose who was making her first start in almost 6 months last time out and ran a good third. She is lightly raced and has shown a powerful closing kick down the lane and with a good break she could pull off an upset at 15/1 on the morning line.

Race 9: Two deep to close out our play. Top pick will be #2 Wave Over Phoebe who is coming off a win at a shorter distance while pulling away at the end while running against a 17-Mile per hour head wind. The added distance should not be a problem for this 3 year old daughter of Wave Carver. We will also use #4 Real and Spectacular who was much the best in a strong win two races back with this rider (Rodrigo Aceves) in a good final time. Dangerous.

$28 Ticket: All/2/7,10/2,4

Stakes Action Kick-Off

Hola Amigos,

It is Friday night of Racing at Los Alamitos Race Course. Tonight's early pick four consists of 10, 8, 7, and 9 horse fields which makes for some nice betting choices. We have one single in the early pick four and it comes in the third leg. We kick off a week of Grade 1 races running tomorrow and Sunday night. Let's get to it.

Race 1: Three deep in this event of thoroughbreds with #1 Pay for Play who has been running against tougher while going off as the favorite and finishing second three times in a row. I expect this mare is to be favorite again with the slight drop in class. My Top Pick will be #4 Sudden Quest who has shown decent speed in his races and keeps a ten pound break with the apprentice aboard. Also using #6 which comes off a front running victory last time out and goes first off the claim for trainer Keith Craigmyle (Claimed Back) who is hitting at 28% with that move.

Race 2: Two deep in this event with #1 Two Blessings who is changing from a 5% barn to a 21% barn and also gets the services of leading rider Rodrigo Aceves. In addition, we will use #8 Damienlittlebug who has a longshot chance of upsetting this field. This filly has had some tough luck out the gate recently and with this outside post, anything can happen.

Race 3: Our single is #6 Slr Stevie Ray who is just a professional going strong at the age of 10. This gelding puts up consistent running numbers to put him in the hunt and his class alone (8 wins and $158k in earnings) should put him over the top of this field. Single.

Race 4: Four Deep to close out our ticket with #4 Therealthing, #5 El Jerente, #6 Quarter Moon Action, and #9 Smashing Waves who is making his first start back since September of 2011 but shows a solid workout and has always ran good off a freshening (Top Pick).

$24 Ticket: 1,4,6/1,8/6/4,5,6,9

Kayla and Owens visit Los Alamitos

Hola Amigos,

Welcome to another night of racing at los alamitos race course. Good fields all around for a nine race card. Kory Owens ( Trainer of Santa Anita Handicap hope full Uh Oh Bango) ships down a runner in the opener with Jockey Kayla Stra named to ride. It is a contentious group of eight to get the night started with a nice $11,000 purse for $5,000 claimers. Let's Get to it.

Race 1: I really like a horse to start and that horse is #5 You Bettor Beware. This colt has turned in consistent efforts in his last two starts which has resulted in wins. He goes first off the claim for trainer Justin Clark who wins at 31% with new acquisitions. In addition the trainer-Jockey combo of Clark and Gomez is hitting at 36%. Not bad at all. He can be on the lead or close to it. Dangerous. Single.

Race 2: #1 Stray Cat always seems to have trouble out the gate but last time he showed a nice grinding kick to rally for second place beaten a neck. I like his draw and he should break much better with a first time started right to his outside. Single.

Race 3: Four deep in this event and hoping for a price. Using #2 Chocolate Caliente , #3 Sister Lucy, #6 Loon Lost, and #7 Skims Chime (top pick).

Race 4: All Button.

$32 Ticket: 5/1/2,3,6,7/All

Chilly night in OC

Hola amigos, its a cloudy breezy night here at los alamitos. Expecting another great night of racing. Short on time tonight so no real analysis of the play today except for the singles. Lets get to it.

Race 1: All Button. Weak maiden field. Anybody can win.

Race 2: Single #3 Top Torero. Speed of speed. First off the claim and dropping.

Race 3: Four deep with 3,5,6,7.

Race 4: Single #5 who comes off the claim for owner and trainer Charles Treece and has shown good running figures.

$32 Ticket: All/3/3,5,6,7/5

Friday Night in a Quick Tempo

Hola Amigos,

Racing is back at Los Alamitos after long week. Nine race card today with some solid fields all around from start to finish. Best of all, both the early and late pick four's look like thay have potential to provide some good payouts. We are going to start the early pick four with a single in hopes of being loaded for the remaining legs. Let's get to it.

Race 1: We are going to single #1 Quick Tempo to begin our night. This is a weak maiden field and this gelding has many positives going for him. He joins a new barn that is hitting at 43%, comes off a freshening since December, draws the rail, lightly raced (only 3rd lifetime start) and is dropping in class. Like his breeding and should improve. Single.

Race 2:  We have a deserving 6-5 morning line favorite in this race with #9 Finding Moby. Not so confident on his chances because there are quite a few runners that could improve and upset the favorite, which is why we are also using #1 Pure Jess, #2 Kingman Miss, #6 Thequenslastcorona (top pick), and #7 Creston Dasher.

Race 3: We are going two deep in this race and using #3 Winners Streak who is coming off a layoff since November and shows a bullet workout leading up to this race (Top pick). Also using #8 Wave Flash who has been facing better and drops in class and with a good break he could be long gone.

Race 4: To close out this ticket we will go three deep. Our top pick is #1 Bud Cheeks who last time got second at this level while very fractious at the gate when making his first start since october. Also using #4 Jump in Apache who won last out at this same level with a career best speed figure while pulling away late (and she beat the boys). Finally, we could not leave out the always dangerous #8 Man of Mine.

$30 Ticket: 1/1,2,6,7,9/3,8/1,4,8

Good luck!.

Stay tuned and follow me on twitter @LosPonies.

Late pick 4 looks good too. Ticket will be later on my twitter feed.

Welcome Back Ed Burgart

After a two week vacation we have Track Announcer Ed Burgart back in the booth to call the racing action.
Great looking fields set for the early pick 4 tonight which looks to be a tough one. Let's get to it:

Race 1: Two deep in this event with our top choice #2 My Miracle Dip who is coming off a win at a slightly lower class level and is already a two time winner from four lifetime starts. Also using the the outside runner #8 Cub Scout which is dropping first off the claim for trainer Paul Jones.

Race 2: In this maiden Thoroughbred event we are going three deep. Using #3 At Last a Wildcat who is dropping from across town and gets the services of leading rider. Also throwing in #4 Nemrac which is dropping from up north and shows up from the tough connections of Charlton and Craigmyle. Our top pick is #5 Mama's Stroker who is making her third lifetime start and gets the blinkers added for the first time for a strong barn and should show more speed.

Race 3: Two deep in this event. Using #4 Jason's Year who is making his second start off a layoff and is dropping in class and always seems to break good. Speaking of breaking good, our top choice #8 Ocean Secret is taking a slight drop in class and if he break out the gate like his past races he should be tough.

Race 4: Closing out the late pick 4 with another two horses. Top pick will be deserving favorite #3 Cowboy Surfer which has some competitive numbers for this field. Also using longshot #10 Too Chayo which exits a live heat where two runners returned to win and his outside post can't hurt either.

#24 Ticket: 2,8/3,4,5/4,8/3,10

Good Luck!
